GROSVENOR CHAPEL CHOIR - VACANCY FOR AN ALTO

The Grosvenor Chapel, South Audley Street, London W1 has a vacancy for an alto (male or female) in the professional vocal ensemble of 5 singers (SSATB).  Above all we are looking for an experienced musician with a blending voice, excellent sight reading, and an understanding of consort singing with one voice to a part who is also capable of singing solo in a wide variety of music.  You might be a professional singer, an advanced student, or an experienced singer working in another profession who wishes to continue making liturgical music to a high standard.  The choir is augmented with extra voices from time to time and at Christmas and Easter, and we have a tradition of orchestral masses a few times a year.  We also give occasional concerts.  Please see the music list on the Chapel website for our typical repertoire.

The immediate requirement is for a singer interested in a flexible job share covering at least 3 out of 4 Sundays (75%) per month and other services by arrangement.

The Eucharist (9.45am for 11am) is sung on every Sunday throughout the year except on the Sundays after Christmas Day and Easter Day. We also sing for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and Eucharist on Christmas Day, for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Ascension Day and All Souls (6.30pm) and Good Friday (12 noon). We also sing a monthly choral evensong on a Thursday evening (5.15 for 6.30) and there are a number of carol services each year as well as weddings, funerals, memorial services and baptisms.

The arrangement between church and regular singers is on a self-employed basis and whilst we understand that you might not be able to sing at all choral services, we do ask you to give the Chapel priority (especially at busy times of the year), and may ask you to relinquish your position if absences become prolonged or too frequent.  Deputies are usually booked for you. The appointment is conditional on satisfactory references and the completion of a declaration of suitability in accordance with Diocese of London safeguarding practice.

Our singers are valued members of the Chapel community, enthusiastically supported by congregation and staff. The musical life of the chapel is currently flourishing with new developments ahead of the chapel’s 300thanniversary in 2030, and a genuine commitment to excellence and the importance of top-quality liturgical music.  Whilst the repertoire is based in both English and continental renaissance and early baroque repertoire (as befits the nature of the ensemble), we also include 18thc. Viennese masses, and appropriate romantic and contemporary pieces, including occasional commissions.

Sunday Eucharists and midweek chapel services are currently paid at £85 (higher for services at Christmas). Weddings, funerals and memorial services currently pay £125. These fees are kept under review, and we are committed to ensuring they are competitive. Singers are responsible for their own tax and national insurance.

Auditions will be held by arrangement.  You will be asked to sing a solo of your choice, and to join the choir for a service.  We hope to fill the position as soon as possible.

Interested singers are asked to send a CV to the Director of Music, Richard Hobson at hbsrnh@aol.com.
